Pumpkin Fun

We had so much fun learning about pumpkins this week! We learned that pumpkins start as seeds and then grow into sprouts. The sprouts turn into vines and on the vines grow flowers. These flowers develop into little green pumpkins. Then the green pumpkins grow into the big (usually orange) pumpkins that we can carve into jack-o-lanterns.

Monday we made a book about pumpkin growth. Did your child “read” it to you?

Tueday we visited Hermanson's Pumpkin Patch. Our fieldtrip was a blast! It was the first time on a school bus for several of our friends and they all did a great job riding safely. At the farm we saw animals including goats, donkeys, llamas, a calf, a pig, a sheep, bunnies, and cats. The morning class got to go on a wagon ride, although we didn’t get the usual view of the pumpkins growing due to the muddy conditions. In the afternoon it was too muddy after the noon downpour so we weren’t able to go on a wagon ride at all. The Hermanson’s gave us a coloring book for each of the afternoon kiddos to make up for the missed ride and this is in your child’s red folder.

We saw pumpkins that were orange, white, yellow, striped, bumpy and more! There was a spooky barn maze too. When we clapped really loud we made ghosts fly, cats meow, and witches cackle. Check out our photo gallery page for pictures of the fun. Thank you to all the chaperones who joined us, your help was very much appreciated!!!!!

Wednesday we created a diagram of pumpkin parts and labeled them. These “science” experiments are decorating our classroom. We even cut open a real pumpkin to see what’s inside and had the opportunity to help scoop out the pulp and seeds during playtime.

Thursday we read a book called “The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin”. It told the story of a square pumpkin that saved the day. We then created our own unique pumpkins of any shape, size, color, and pattern. We made a pattern of unique pumpkins to practice our math skills. You will get to see your child's pattern at conferences.

The firefighters made it back to visit our afternoon class on Thursday too! You can view photos of both firefighter visits on our photo gallery page as well.
